Water Clock

Why this clock exists

The Metropolitan Museum preserves a fourth-century BCE Egyptian model of a water clock whose contents drained through a small hole over a measured interval. Flow allowed timekeeping to continue when no useful shadow appeared. This vessel fills instead of drains, mapping the whole civil day onto one rising surface. Its wavering edge keeps a little of water's resistance to becoming a perfectly uniform instrument.
