Why this clock exists

The medieval Hours of the Virgin organized prayer around eight canonical hours: Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. Bells made those intervals public, reaching people who owned no clock. This page assigns the names to approximate civil-time segments while admitting that historical schedules varied. Its optional pattern lets one moment become a shared summons rather than a private reading.
