Why this clock exists

A surviving Science Museum prototype speaking clock from the 1950s assembled recorded phrases to announce the time. This matrix also builds a sentence from prepared pieces, though it rounds to the nearest five minutes. Ordinary speech accepts a softness that instruments usually resist. The exact line below preserves seconds; the illuminated words show how people often prefer a useful approximation to a perfect report.
